I had a PSA test of near zero in Nov 2023. Then I had a repeat test in February 2024 which showed it has risen to 3.0 - still very low, but an unusual rise. That test saved my life. I had my prostate removed a few months later and it was already 7/10 on what’s called the Gleeson scale - ie it was getting pretty bad. So my advice is: if you have any doubt then a PSA test is a great place to start in the detection of prostate cancer. Anyone who says otherwise has misplaced their common sense.

Chasing a rising PSA with no cancer creates a nightmare. Fear every year. It is a disaster.

My prostate cancer was diagnosed following what seemed like a muscular injury that would not heal. I am an 8th Dan Black Belt in Jiu Jitsu and Karate. However I had raised PSA and digital exam revealed hard areas in my Prostate. An MRI confirmed cancer and biopsies under a local confirmed 3 cancers with a T3 lesion. I suffered chronic radiation burns and had bladder surgery for a necroses/ cancerous area . Now I live with the consequences and daily issues post treatment and surgery.

20 years ago my doctor discouraged me from PSA testing but I insisted and established a trend. When that trend went suddenly up significantly 4 years ago that indicated trouble and thankfully my doctor retired & I lucked into getting a young guy as his replacement. MRI & biopsy indicated a significant problem and I had robotic surgery followed by radiation. A friend of mine had a similar problem but it was found later and he has had surgery, radiation followed by long term chemo to fight the other places in his body it’s spread to. Get tested when you are young to build up history so if an abnormal trend emerges you can get it treated before it spreads to the rest of the body. An acquaintance I knew at the dog park was the same age as me but his cancer was discovered very late so his treatments were pain drugs & palliative care. Bad outcome.

I had PSA 21. My Dr referred me to a Urologist. I had finger test, MRI, biopsy under GA. Fortunately no cancer, turns out likely I had elevated PSA from cycling. 🙄

Read about Alban years ago. The PSA test seems hugely inappropriate as it leads to large numbers of unnecessary invasive interventions. The vast majority of patients would have died WITH prostate cancer rather than OF it. Obviously keep an eye for blood or other signs, but for me I agree that most prostate problems are the result of too many birthdays, and don’t require the PSA.
