That’s exactly who they are. The problem is that people often buy them as babies because they’re adorable. They bottle-feed them, take photos with them, and imagine they’ll grow into some exotic version of a horse. Then reality shows up. The baby grows up. The instincts remain. The zebra becomes exactly what it was always designed to be. A zebra. Some individuals become manageable. A few become genuinely bonded and safe to handle. But many do not, and that’s not because they’re bad animals. It’s because people expected them to abandon thousands of years of instinct and become something they aren’t. When that happens, many end up in auctions. That’s one of the reasons we now have 10 zebras at ASIAB. Trust me, that was never on my bingo card. But what choice do they have? Not because they’re easy. Because every single one deserves a future that respects what they actually are.
