I disagree with your assessment that the Soviets were more aggressive because they executed the Tsar and his family. Given that time when the white royalists were still able to mount a serious threat to the revolution, the tsar and his family presented a credible rallying point and threat. They had to go. Mao spared puyi because the Qing dynasty was over for nearly 50 years when the PRC was established in 1949. He was no longer a threat to the revolution and sparing him to show mercy is a more pragmatic PR move. Preservation of the revolution must always take priority.

the movie does paint him pretty sympathetically, but when i went to harbin with my family on a paid tour part of which included visting his home and offices. the sense i got was apathy towards China rather then hate, he went along with what Japan said because they promised to maintain the lifestyle he had. that said the tour guide did also explain, the apathy was rehabilitated out of him during his long term detention.

What do you think would have happened if Chiang Kai Sheks army actually attempted to regain the mainland with US support, and then, remained a "dictatorship"? Assuming Chiang Kai Shek does not have a heart attack in 75', and chooses a radical successor who does not give democracy to the people, therefore, choosing politics similiar to fascism.

A few points: 1. Obviously we cannot hold him accountable for anything done in his name when he was the Emperor of China, since he was a small child at that time. 2. We can hold him accountable for becoming a Japanese puppet. But whilst I don't think he thought Manchouko would be independent, I do think he expected to be autonomous and more than a puppet. His father, Prince Chun, came to warn him that he would be a powerless puppet, but he doesn't seem to have agreed. 3. Bernardo Bertolucci's film "The Last Emperor" does show him go to Manchuria willingly and it shows that people around him, including Empress Wanrong, thought it was a bad idea. In fact we see Puyi's cruelty in the film turn her into a nervous wreck.
