I think it is high time we tell ourselves the truth. But before I go into my message, let me be clear: this video does not justify mob justice, xenophobia or violence of any kind. In South Africa, Nigerians are often accused of being involved in drugs, fraud and other illegal activities. Similar complaints have also been heard in Ghana and other African countries. Not every accusation is true, and no Nigerian should be treated as a criminal simply because of their nationality. But we also need to ask an uncomfortable question: where are these perceptions coming from? Some Nigerians constantly display unexplained wealth, spend lavishly and live lifestyles that appear inconsistent with the businesses or jobs they claim to do. Some are also too loud, unnecessarily provocative and constantly attracting attention to themselves. Of course, owning a luxury car or spending money does not automatically make someone a criminal. But when this behaviour exists alongside actual cases of illegal activity involving a few individuals, suspicion begins to spread to the wider Nigerian community. And this is where the real damage happens. The actions of a few begin to affect thousands of innocent Nigerians who are genuinely working hard, running legitimate businesses and trying to build honest lives. The unfortunate reality is that people often judge an entire community by the behaviour of a few. It is unfair, but it happens. So instead of dismissing every concern as jealousy or xenophobia, Nigerians abroad must also have an honest conversation about personal responsibility and how individual behaviour affects the wider community. No innocent Nigerian should be attacked, harassed or punished for another person’s actions. Anyone involved in crime should be arrested and prosecuted individually.
