As a fan of both I’d recommend reading Mistborn first, it’s a complete trilogy, and you can read the first novel as a standalone and still enjoy it as a complete story, where as sadly ASOIAF is unfinished, and a bigger commitment. I love ASOIAF more, but it’s a bigger commitment and it leaves you without a good conclusion. TLDR: read Mistborn, if you like the first book read the trilogy, then start A Game of Thrones

it all depends on what you're looking for in a story right now. I'd say both authors are approaching a general theme of hope In two very opposite methods. Sanderson approaches story telling in very definitive terms, meaning that he lays things out plainly but it has moments of the pure sublime. You'll experience some of the best moments of pure character actualization in contemporary fantasy. it's also a much more positive work in it's outlook of the indomitable human will. ASOIAF is much darker and gritty, characters are all well written and the prose of Martin is excellent in describing the world those characters inhabit. the subject matter is much darker but the plot is much more interesting compared to most of Sanderson works and it's dripping with foreshadowing, you really need to pay attention while reading ASOIAF. Both are incredible but only one is a complete work. Once you're done with ASOIAF you'll be wanting more which I think is just never going to come
