@auraincyber: The biggest risk isn’t in the small things we do every day. To be clear, none of these is automatically unsafe on its own. Bluetooth can be useful, cookies are required for many websites to function and voice verification is still used by legitimate services. The point is reducing unnecessary exposure, not just trying to become invisible online. The concerns are different for each one: Bluetooth can leave your device discoverable when you don’t need it to be. Using the same real identity everywhere makes accounts easier to link together. “Accept all cookies” can enable cross-site tracking and broader data collection. Voice verification uses a biometric factor, which is much harder to replace than a password if it is ever compromised. App permissions are often granted by default even when the app doesn’t genuinely need that level of access. And yes, some of this is basic cyber hygiene. That’s exactly why it matters. Most people don’t get compromised by movie-style hacking (looking at you Mr Robot); they get exposed through convenience, oversharing, excessive permissions and data that accumulates over time. Which one do you think people underestimate the most? 👇 #informationsecurity #infosec #cybersecurity #cyberhabits #cybereducation

I went to the doctor a while back and they had a sign posted that said they recorded audio in the room to help train the staff and that recordings were protected by HIPPA like any other patient info but that you had to ask to NOT be recorded. That was the only sign disclosing the info that I saw and it was posted relatively high on the wall near the reception desk, surrounded by other various notices, etc (very easy for your eyes to gloss over), no one mentioned it directly to me at any point and I purposefully waited to see if someone would; I assumed that even if I requested it be turned off and they said they would turn it off I couldn’t be truly sure that it was actually off or just anonymized and given how many times medical groups and offices have been hacked I don’t trust it anyway. I was only there to get my MRI results but imagine how it would affect someone seeing say… an OBGYN? I always assume my actions/words are being recorded outside of my home but it definitely impacted the appointment. Even knowing you’re being recorded increases stress/anxiety levels and considering how many people avoid the doctor any way, seems like a terrible idea to me. Not to even mention the lack of disclosure of any additional ways that data can be used, what third parties may have access to it, or where or for how long it’s stored, even within the boundaries of HIPPA. Wild times we are living in…

I started asking companies years ago if I could opt out of being recorded "for employee training purposes" most employees don't know or say no, and none of them see a problem with it, even the ones that use voice verification.

But it takes so long to decline cookies or not. I mean.. I can reject the non-essentials but if I enter the whole list I have to decline more than 100 websites(?) manually.

I never used my legal name to sign up for anything, and 10-20 years later I am tickled by how those names have stood the test of time. I signed up for a Target account in high school in the 2000s and when I went to pickup a package in person during covid they didn’t have my real name on anything but they did have Blow Chris 😭

I'm always stunned when someone tells me that they don't back up anything, at all, and they have no idea about the protocols they can do to keep them safe. I've been burned often enough to find every solution and implement them. Thank you for sharing this. I've already done them all, plus using a VPN and DDG.
