@rovinghaggis: 🏴 MINCE ROUND 🏴 It’s funny, when I was younger this was a pie I was not excited about, but now - I love it! So easy to put together and it can sit all ready in the fridge till you are ready to bake. It’s a crowd pleaser. Serve with any sort of potatoes from mash to chips, and if you like serve the carrots one the side instead of in the pie, and for me, peas are obligatory! Serves 4-6 (23cm diameter pie dish) 500g lean beef mince 2 tbsp olive oil 2 large carrots, chopped into small dice 2 sticks celery, chopped into small dice 1 medium onion, finely chopped Good pinch of salt 2 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp Vegemite/marmite/bovril Generous dash of Worcestershire sauce 350ml beef stock 2 tbsp fine ground oatmeal 2 packs ready made puff pastry (I used @caremepastry spelt) 1 egg, beaten Warm the oil in a deep frying pan and brown the beef mince off really well. Add the onion & salt and soften for a few minutes, then add the carrots and celery. Stir to combine and add the soy, Vegemite, Worcestershire and stock. Let it simmer for about 30 minutes until the vegetables are soft and the meat tender then thicken with the fine ground oats. Let it simmer until the liquid has been mostly absorbed, leaving the mince coated with a delicious gravy. Let it cool. Butter your pie dish generously, roll out your puff a little to make sure it fits the dish then lay it in, pressing to fill the edges. Add in your mince and level out nicely. Brush the edge of the pie with egg wash before topping with your other sheet of pastry, cut the edges off with a sharp knife and then pinch between your fingers to crimp and seal the pie. Cut two slits in the top, gently score the surface and decorate with the pastry scraps if you wish. Egg wash all over and either refrigerate till ready to bake or pop straight into a preheated oven at 200c (fan) for about 35-40 minutes until golden and piping hot. Serve cut into wedges. #minceround #mincepie #beef #pie #Scotland

Back when I was a teenager getting pished... Some of the bakers would sell from the back of the kitchen around midnight, either a bag of fresh butteries or a mince round on the walk home was sensational.

NZ has mastered the pie and taken it to next level. Fat Bastard Pies in Invercargill are our favourite. Cheats tip…if you haven’t got premade pastry on hand or no time to make it …slice up a potatoe…zap in microwave briefly to cook and lay over top. Brush with butter. Bake.

Mom almost always included carrots to get us 6 kids more veggies and stretch to feed us. A slice of this and salad was a treat. Especially as it’s when we could safely indulge in the Daddies Favourite Sauce.

I loved mince round. I haven't had a good one since my mum died in 1985. She made hers with her homemade shortcrust.

The root of one of my most favourite jokes of all time:
Man goes into the butcher's and asks "Can I have a mince round?"
Butcher looks at him and says "You can dae whit ye like pal"
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Also a fantastic bit of Scottish cuisine. Can't wait for my copy of Scran to arrive!
