Winter and Karina had been competing for Top 1 since the beginning of the school year. Everyone knew about them. Karina was the obedient, hardworking student who always had her notes complete before the teacher even asked. Winter was the complete opposite. She was always getting scolded for sleeping in class, talking during lessons, or coming in a few minutes late. But somehow, she was still one of the smartest students in their year. And Karina hated how effortlessly Winter could keep up with her. After every exam, they'd compare scores. “98.” Karina smiled. Winter looked at her paper. “99.” Karina frowned. “One point.” “A win is a win.” Karina rolled her eyes. “You're annoying.” Winter only laughed. But secretly, she loved seeing Karina get competitive. What Karina didn't know was that Winter had liked her long before their rivalry even started. She remembered the first time she noticed her. Karina was helping another student understand a difficult lesson. She wasn't showing off. She wasn't trying to get attention. She just genuinely wanted to help. Winter had watched from the back of the classroom, pretending not to care. That was when she first thought, She's cute. And somehow, that little crush never disappeared. --- A few weeks later, another exam came. Winter finished early and spent the rest of the time staring out the window. Karina was still writing. Winter glanced at her. She smiled. “Still fighting for that Top 1?” Karina didn't even look up. “Obviously.” Winter chuckled. “Good luck.” The results came out a few days later. Karina got 99. Winter got 98. Karina stared at the scores. “I won?” Winter looked at her paper. “Looks like it.” Karina smiled proudly. “Finally.” Winter laughed. “Don't get too excited.” But she was actually happy. Not because she lost. Because Karina was smiling. --- The next exam was different. Winter had always been naturally good at certain subjects, especially the ones Karina struggled with. She could've easily gotten a higher score. But during the exam, she deliberately left a few answers wrong. Nothing obvious. Just enough to make sure Karina would score higher. When the results came out, Karina was Top 1 again. She celebrated with her friends. Winter smiled from across the room. She didn't regret it. At least, not yet. --- A few days later, Karina was walking around the school garden during lunch. She wasn't looking for anyone. She just wanted some quiet. Then she heard Winter's voice nearby. Karina stopped behind a tree when she noticed Winter talking with her friend. “You seriously didn't study much for that exam?” Winter shrugged. “I studied.” Her friend laughed. “Barely.” Winter chuckled. Then her friend suddenly asked, “Wait... you purposely got some questions wrong, didn't you?” Winter looked at her. Her friend narrowed her eyes. “You wanted Karina to get Top 1.” Winter only chuckled. She didn't deny it. Karina's eyes widened. She quietly looked down at her own hands. Why would Winter do that? Then she remembered the exam. The questions Winter had answered incorrectly. The questions she knew Winter could easily solve. Karina suddenly understood. Winter hadn't lost. She had let her win. Karina walked away before either of them noticed her. She needed time to think. --- The next morning, Karina barely spoke to Winter. Winter noticed immediately. “You okay?” “Fine.” “You sure?” “Yes.” Winter stared at her. Karina avoided eye contact. For the rest of the day, she kept thinking about what she'd heard. Finally, after class, she found Winter alone. “You.” Winter looked up. “Me?” “You let me win.” Winter went silent.
