@jessicaoutofthecloset: Incentives, discounts, vouchers! Oh wait, not for disabled people… The newly announced 2027 NHS walking incentive scheme IS ableist. Shouldn’t disabled people get the same opportunities as able-bodied people? #NHS #ableism #disabled #fyp #accessability

How many people will have their PIP compromised if they actually follow this incentive? It feels sinister

Imo it also kinda comes across as the old “walk it off” saying. And reenforces that people with problems just need to exercise more

"well what if disabled people are allowed to use their disability aid?" well what about the days we're unable to get out of the bed due to pain or brain fog or exhaustion?

It’s preventative healthcare, and this is important. The programme isn’t out yet - no details are finalised, including what the rewards and incentives offered could be. Without knowing if the programme offers or does not offer equivalent forms of activity, it’s really a reach here to call it ableist.

Why do abled people even *need* to be paid for walking thirty minutes? Thirty minutes?? When my disability wasn’t as bad I could easily walk for hours every day. Considering they’re always questioning us about the money the government spends on us, I think it’s only fair we get to question them.

so the nhs shouldn't try to encourage people to be active?

This is preventative healthcare, the money spent now on ensuring able-bodied people stay active will save the NHS in the long run, allowing for more funding for the people who are less abled. While I agree more should be done to support people with disabilities, this is not the stealth tax you make it out to be.

it should be 30 minutes of any physical activity per day, because in the end it doesn't really matter what you're doing just that you're doing something

This comment section is wild. No one is saying walking shouldn’t be encouraged but thinking that rewarding it with tax payer money is fine meanwhile disabled people are constantly being shamed and called lazy and burdens for receiving taxpayer money for “doing nothing” when they need it to actually survive is telling….

This would reduce the load on the nhs and allow them to focus on those who need it

I can’t even see how they’d measure it? Is everyone being given a fit bit?! How would they know someone didn’t just walk several at once. It’d be nice if they invested in leisure centres, fitness equipment in parks, and other bits like that, instead of closing things. Or made existing fitness places free so people can do what works for them.

I can’t help but feel like this will be used as a means of proving people don’t qualify for assistance rather than incentivising exercise

the majority of people are able bodied and some genuinely need an incentive just because they’re paying attention to one group doesn’t mean they’re forgetting another ESPECIALLY in this day and age

Yeah it’s pretty annoying because I used to walk 3 miles home from work and now I can’t walk 100 metres. I should get a lot of back pay on this one

I don’t think this is the best thought out idea but I so think the nhs putting some focus into preventative healthcare (even if sadly it doesn’t help everyone) is a good thing

I originally thought it was an amazing idea until I thought about for more than 5 seconds and realized that anyone who can actually participate is likely already walking 30 minutes a day by just doing chores. If it is preventative and not some sort of scheme then it should just be general exercise as in any type from walking to yoga to body building to dance. But even then all that would happen is that people do it for a short amount of time to get a benefit then never again so still rather pointless as well as exclusive. (I hate having dysgraphia I posted this comment half way 3 on accident 3 separate times😭)

I get this isnt accessible for some, but it is for most. If completely sedentary people take this on, they will down the line hopefully have less health problems, therefore more money that the nhs can spend on disabled people. Not every policy can be targeted to everybody, and thats just life.
