Love this. Just wish more people understood what the Eureka flag and the whole saga actually stands for.

Nice one. It’s worth reminding those who use that flag how multicultural the miners were. Negro American, Russian, Welsh, just to mention a few.

Great post but would have included the Gold Museum that’s part of that park you walked around. Tgere were many many talks before hand between miner elected representatives and soldiers. Peter Laylor being one of them. But the talks failed. The suburb we call Soldiers Hill north west from the park is where the soldiers lived and the miners had a couple of lookouts keeping watch up around neighbouring suburb we call Black Hill. These lookouts were instructed to fire their guns to let the rest of the miners at the stockade know the soldiers were coming. One look out was able to get one shoot off but unfortunately he and the other lookout were both shot dead before they could let off any more warning shots. The soldiers got the jump on the miners. Tge soldiers had more weapons and more ammunition. It was a slaughter from the start. Peter Laylor got shot in the arm and was quickly rushed away and hidden. He survived but due to being hidden without medical treatment he had to have his arm amputated. He later became a politician.

if you go to the cemetery in Ballarat, the graveside of the 3 soldiers killed in the rebellion are buried together and they have the Union Jack flying over the graves.

I love Ballaarat – the historical spelling, often used in reference to the gold rush era, heritage organizations, or historical documents.

I'm not sure if there is a movie about Eureka, but they really should make one. And since the battle itself lasted for 15 minutes, they could show the actual battle scene in real time.
