@channelnewsasia: Former South Korea national football coach Hong Myung-bo apologised on Thursday (Jul 30) for falling short of public expectations at the World Cup, while denying he received preferential treatment in the process that led to his appointment. Hong appeared alongside former Korea Football Association (KFA) president Chung Mong-gyu at a government hearing as authorities investigate alleged transparency and governance issues within the KFA. Coach Hong had come under fire after South Korea was knocked out in the group stages of the World Cup, following a 1-0 loss to South Africa. His decision to bench captain Son Heung-min was heavily criticised. #southkorea #southkoreanews #worldcup2026
I think everyone here don’t understand the context of this issue, it’s not simply a “it’s just a game” situation, it’s the deep rooted corruption involved in the KFA (using personal connections to get the manager role instead of the official process to appoint a competent person, plus considering the massive amount of taxpayers money that goes into the association) since years ago that has built up to the World Cup which people have been angry about. So pls do not be ignorant to simply comment ‘like they were going to win’ as it is not just a matter of this.

Such toxic society. It's just sports, and if anyone is to blame, it's the players who failed to perform not only the coach

South Koreans were all expecting their national team to win the world cup. The coaching staff will now be jailed for failing to meet the target.

It's not about winning,it's about finding out what really happened.
Things happened at the WC to eliminate bad practices in the gov't. There is corruption happening, just appointing people without the procesd is not good.
It's not about that black and white ball,it's about giving athletes the support they deserve by improving sports policies and guidelines.
