In the Soviet Union, traveling abroad wasn't as simple as buying a ticket. Before my family could leave the country, we had to collect endless documents, pass medical examinations, attend a party interview, and exchange only a tiny amount of money. Every step felt like another test. In this video, I'll tell you the story of my family's very first trip to Bulgaria's famous Golden Sands resort in the early 1980s. You'll experience everything through my eyes—from receiving the long-awaited vacation voucher and boarding a Tu-134 for my first flight, to tasting an ice-cold Coca-Cola for the first time, watching my children treasure a single piece of chewing gum, walking the beautiful streets of Bulgaria, and realizing that even another socialist country could feel like a completely different world.
