𓂀 Ancient Egyptian Word of the Week 𓂀 Deshret Pronounced: DESH-ret The Deshret was the Red Crown of Lower Egypt and one of the oldest symbols of royal authority in ancient Egypt. Lower Egypt was the northern part of the country, especially the fertile Nile Delta where the river spread into multiple branches before reaching the Mediterranean Sea. The Deshret represented the ruler’s authority over this region. Its shape was unmistakable. The crown had a low red body at the front, a tall extension rising at the back, and a long curled projection sweeping forward. The Deshret was closely associated with Wadjet, the cobra goddess and protector of Lower Egypt. Wadjet was one of the great guardian deities of kingship and was often represented by the uraeus cobra worn on the pharaoh’s forehead. After Upper and Lower Egypt were united, the Deshret could be combined with the White Crown of Upper Egypt, known as the Hedjet. Together they formed the Double Crown, symbolizing the pharaoh’s rule over both halves of the kingdom. The Red Crown appears in some of the earliest surviving images of Egyptian kingship. It can be seen on rulers and deities in reliefs, statues, and ceremonial objects throughout thousands of years of Egyptian history. Despite appearing so frequently in ancient art, no original royal Deshret has ever been discovered. Like Egypt’s other royal crowns, it may have been made from materials that did not survive, or it may have been treated as sacred regalia that was carefully guarded and reused. The Deshret was therefore much more than a distinctive red crown. It was a powerful symbol of Lower Egypt, divine protection, and the pharaoh’s authority over the northern kingdom.
