I only had about $5000 to move to China with my dog. That includes all of the fees that I needed to pay for him to get here as well.

So theoretically, I could move to another country as early as the upcoming tax season and be set for a little while.

Things to keep in mind: Not all places do this but these are expenses most foreigners can expect to pay. There is Shikikin (1-2 months for the security deposit which is refundable). Reikin (Key money not refundable and can be 1-2 months if rent). Guarantor Fee (50-100% of one months fee. This is if a company is co-signing for you). The Agency fee (1 month of rent for the realtor). Lastly utilities. Not every place will require these but it's common for foreigners to pay all of this to rent, if they find a place that does rent to foreigners. I grew up in Sapporo but returned to America at 19. I've moved back to Japan a handful of times either for family reasons or work. I've never experienced the Guarantor Fee, key money, or Agency fee but that's because I understand the system and can do it on my own. Just expect it can be over 10k depending on prefecture, how the building owners feel about foreigners renting, and location.

my life in Tokyo :
Most apartments, especially in bigger cities, require the equivalent of 6-7 months of rent to move in. They almost always require the first 2 months of rent, agency fee, a guarantor fee, a deposit, key money, gift money, and possibly more. That is the standard. It’s possible to find apartments without some of these fees, but it really limits your options especially as I said if you’re in a competitive area. For my first apartment in Tokyo I had to pay the first 2 months of rent, plus a guarantor fee, agency fee, deposit, key money, and gift money. All of those equalled 1 month of rent each. My monthly rent was ¥110,000 so in total I had to pay ¥770,000 (the equivalent of 7 months of rent) to move in.
