As a 4-H mom, we invite buyers to the sale about a week before with a flyer for the sale, a plate of homemade goodies and this year I did a photo page of my kids with their animals. At the sale, they say thank you and shake the hand of the buyer. The week after fair, handwritten thank you notes and another plate of goodies to the buyers.

At ours: Kids need to sign up for auction and can only sell 1 animal. The kid can choose to sell the animal outright or take a premium only. The buyer can then choose to take the animal or pay just the premium, leaving the animal with the kid. Market price per lb is figured the week before fair, all market animals are weighed in at the start of the fair. We sell beef, hogs, sheep, goats, if entered poultry and rabbits. Our county places classes blues, reds, and white, and a auction animal has to earn a blue to participate in the auction.

We call ours is a Premium only auction. We have a floor price set for the actual value of the animal, since the there are a few animals that are also purchased to go to a locker, however most of those sales are prearranged before the sale. Most businesses just pay Premium and turn back animal to kid. We also have a buyers auction, where previous buyers get a meal paid for before the sale by a local sponsoring business.

So our 4-H sale has both premium only and premium/base bid. So if the kid is wanting to take their project onto a state fair or another big time show they can run it through the ring and get the premium from local businesses. Base bid we have a committee that finds buyers for all the species. Now they aren’t all the same buyer but they’ll all have one. Those bids are just market value for that weight class of animal. So our steers were bid at $2.30 this year so if the kid went into the sale sold their animal and if that buyer wanted to butcher it they have to pay the whole base bid along with whatever the premium was. Now if they aren’t butchered they go on the base bid truck with the other animals. We’re a little different for our area though because we send our steers straight to Tyson and have a Meats judge out there grade the carcass and we have our own carcass contest. We have added money into that from local producers. Obviously then steers are paid on how they grade through Tyson. We do a whole meeting for the beef kids and they can see how their calf graded. Plus they get a little extra cash if they’re in the Top 5 Carcass’s.

Our local salebarn comes in and sets the floor on all sale animals. That kid is garanteed to get that amount for the animal. If a local business bids the animal above the floor price, “turns” the animal to the salebarn, the buyer only pays the difference between the floor bid and the amount they bid at the sale. Example: Market Steer floor bid is $2,000, local business bids steer to $2,500, salebarn pays $2,000 and the 4H buyer pays $500 and the kid gets $2500. This only happens if the buyer turns it back to the salebarn of course because the salebarn is going to resell that animal at its next auction. I hope that makes since.

Our county has a fantastic meet animal auction. There is a buyer's meal that is donated, and allows buyers time to walk through and talk to the kids. if the buyers do not want the meat, there is an option for it to go to market and the meat animal project will facilitate that. Our kids go around beforehand and give invitations, buyers get a ribbon at the fair, and buyers AND other bidders get handwritten thank yous and pictures after. One thing we brought up at the fair is recognizing Showmanship winners during the auction. We have a sale of Champions for Champion and reserve of each species, but we want to recognize Showmanship winners as well.

We sold all the champion and reserve champion market and breeding animals of all species . Plus we had a county raised section for the cattle both breeding and market . We generated money through various fund raisers through out the year . One year I did a kid fit for the cattle to boost the money added on to the cattle since they had added goats to our county so we wanted to make sure the cattle got enough money to where we didn’t lose any because of cost to the kids . We were able to add almost $1000 to each kid that made the sale both breeding and market cattle . That included breeds champions and weight break champions in the market steers .

Ours is a premium auction. Each exhibitor may sell one market animal. There are requirements they must meet throughout the year. There is a floor bid price. The buyer make choose to keep the animal and pay the floor price or to “ship it”. If there is not a floor buyer for animals then exhibitor takes it home or to locker. I believe some buyers split, but that is worked

Add ons need to be allowed. If I can’t raise my hand to bid on a $2K animal, but I’d love to add $100 to 5 kids add ons keep me participating. Kids should reach out personally to potential buyers. I also think you should be allowed to sell 2 animals period. After that, only if they place 1-2 in a class.

We don’t do a premium sale, we’re one of the few in our area. We sell the animal and/or art hall project. Ours was last Saturday. A local sale barn floors all the market animals, that’s the starting bid, then we go from there. When you go to pay you have the option on market to pay only the premium and the sale barn takes the any

Any kid who brings an animal through the sale must have a thank you letter to the buyer. They can do these in advance, every animal that goes through should have a thank you. Ours has a cap for ribbon placings, grand and reserve have no cap. For ex. Purple ribbon market steer gets $750 I believe, and that’s it no more no less. That makes it hard because that makes it hard for any ROI. however you do get to keep that animal, before it was whoever bought your animal

Our fair is premium only. Animals must make a minimum weight and be in market class to sell. The child retains ownership of the animal after the auction. They can do whatever they want with the animal. Most find a buyer on their own after show season is over. The bidder is only making a donation to the child. During the auction after an animal sells there’s a brief period where bidders can pledge “ add on” money to the winning bid. Allows bidders with smaller budgets to still pledge money to children they want to support without having to pay the whole premium. I will say the more options/floor prices etc you have the more problems you will have. Someone alway will think they were cheated.

Two things that we do here is offer add ons, so if grandma doesn’t want to buy the project but wants to contribute she can add a dollar a pound add on. The other is working with our local sale barn to offer a resale option so a business can support a project but not have to take the project and figure out who gets it

I’d suggest highlighting showmanship winners as well as the class winners, be it sale order, footnote, or announcement from the block.

With selling the animal at fair you can't take it on to state fair or more shows. That was the only draw back we have. So we have to do 2 animal so we can sell 1😳

All of the 4-H livestock are given a last buyer to invite back! Then the county does add on’s and we do a live and online auction.

Make sure and thank and support the businesses that donate. Each kid should send some kind of thank you. Card or plate of cookies. Something to show appreciation

I am over our county 4-H buyers group. I buy for anyone that can not attend or doesn't want to bid at auction. This helps with not offending parents that wonder why certain people or business didn't buy there animals. I also pool money from business that can't afford to buy an animal on there own. Our county has had a buyers group for 40 plus years.

1 animal limit per kid & ask that they only do 1 auction during the season here. We are able to do “add-ons” to kids but it’s a normal auction. We have also done a group buying where we have already gotten our donations together and place them in one pool and had one person bidding until we get to that number we also usually have a friend who we’ve already said hey bit against me on this kid until I get to this number.

At ours we have a lot of small locker plants that come in and buy animals they also set the floor..We also have a thing where anyone can donate “extra money” to the exhibitor of their choice..That way if a grandparent can’t afford or doesn’t need a whole animal they can still help the kids out..All the local banks, insurance companies, dealerships etc participate it goes really good
