The one and only Phyllis Hyman 💜 speaking truth in 1987, and it’s still very relevant today! Black women are raised to be community oriented, always building, elevating, and sustaining any community they’re apart of, and you see how that shows up statistically. We’re the most educated group in America, and we’re the highest demographic of new entrepreneurs. Taraji P. Henson’s bravery to speak up during in The Color Purple press tour made think of this interview, and how black buying power and talent are always welcome, but we are still fighting every single day for equity, or even just a fair wage. Artists have been speaking out for years about the lack of care, equity, or value that coincides with their expectation to ‘deliver,’ and when Black women speak up, we’re often quickly silenced, shamed, humbled, because they rebuttal comes from a centuries long systemic script of keeping black women in their place. We aim for better, higher, more, in every aspect of our lives, and many communities witness, enjoy, and co-benefit from that. But only to that extent- that it can benefit THEM. Black women having autonomy over themselves, motivated by their own desires and livelihood, has always been a point of debate and friction, and makes many people very uncomfortable. One could look at history and easily corroborate what I’m speaking about. Everyone wants our support, and wants us to be in their corner, but when we do that for ourselves, all the think-pieces and opinions start. Ain’t that a blip? The fact is, black women deserve everything and more they ask for. Where would the world be without Black women? Basic respect in the industries where we make an impactful living, is still something we are fighting tooth and nail for. Listen to our stories, hold space for us. It’s sickens me every election cycle when the “listen to black women” phrase comes back around, but at the end of the day, y’all never do. These questions remain: Are our Black Billionaires/Elites doing enough for their communities? How do we push the needle forward even more when we’re still faced with so much systemic and institutionalized racism? Can you value your proximity to whiteness whilst uplifting your community better than marginally? Phyllis was before her time, and was battling her own demons, but boy did she stand on business. She was a true queen and an example of walking the walk.
