Snow leopards living in their natural range typically have a life expectancy of around 10 to 12 years, so at 16, Kaba is considered a senior and, like many older animals, experiences arthritis. That's why he's currently receiving stem cell treatment designed to help reduce discomfort and improve his quality of life. 🦠🔬 The process began by collecting tissue samples from Kaba and sending them to MSU, where researchers grew stem cells from those samples. Once enough cells had been produced, approximately 300 million, they were injected into Kaba's knee. If successful, this could be the first documented case of a snow leopard being successfully treated with stem cells! 💚
