“African American” wasn’t even the name Europeans gave them. They were still calling them negros. Some Black Americans and Black organisations used the term African American. Then leaders like Jesse Jackson popularised it and it was adopted by many because it acknowledged both African ancestry and their identity/history as Americans

You are right Africans use to call them Black Americans in the 1960’s am old enough to remember it was when Jessie Jackson started the Rainbow Push project in the 1970’s and it’s been so ever since but we Africans don’t care what they want to call themselves

I used to refer to them as black Americans as a child, but then when I started watching their movies, I heard them say they are African Americans, so now I'm confused when some say they are not, while others say they are.

It was only accepted because there was not a lot of information that could be obtained. A lot of of our history was burnt and washed away in towns that were flooded over the years so after those generations of people came to Martin Luther King Jesse Jackson, let’s bring everybody together that’s when the African-American term came into play in the 70s or 80s
