Is this language or reflex?
What if you include the pain sounds for chimpanzees, orangutans and other primates? I expect the result would not change.

And the reason why it's an A is because the Ah sound is the easiest sound for a human to make
Fun fact, M is the second easiest sound for humans to make, which is why we got the word Mama across so many languages (babies learn to make these sounds first and start babbling "mamamamama" by their moms, which made it feel like the babies were giving moms the name Mama)

Babies first sounds are usually similar to the aahhh pain sound.

Interesting that we’re universally connected, at least sonically, via pain than joy. Makes sense given how pain is the gateway of our annihilation, a fact we so desperately and universally try to avoid. Pain is to space (consistency) what pleasure is to matter (diversity).

now look at the facial expression of surprise.
Raised eyebrows etc. You will be surprised to know, hihi, that it is not universal.
some cultures wrinkle their noses, for instance.

I would bet that this is evolutionarily good, too! Loud + carrying + distinctive noise for pain means that you'll get the group's attention and help when you're in trouble.

I'd just like to point out a small but important point - pain is not an emotion. It's a physiological response. It can obviously lead to many emotions, but it is not I'm itself an emotional response, it's a primal warning signal
