The impact occurred near what is now the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. The explosion released energy equivalent to billions of atomic bombs, instantly vaporizing the asteroid and much of the surrounding rock. The collision carved out the Chicxulub Crater, measuring about 200 kilometers (125 miles) across, making it one of the largest impact craters ever discovered on Earth. At the time... The impact site was covered by a shallow sea. The collision generated mega-tsunamis hundreds of meters high, triggered powerful earthquakes, and blasted enormous amounts of dust, ash, and sulfur into the atmosphere. For months—and possibly years... Sunlight was blocked around the globe. Temperatures dropped, plants died, food chains collapsed, and about 75% of all species, including all non-avian dinosaurs, became extinct. But if the crater is so massive... Why can't we see it today? Over the next 66 million years... Layers of limestone and other sediments buried the crater beneath the Yucatán Peninsula. From the ground... It looks like ordinary land. Scientists didn't even realize it existed until the late 1970s, when geophysicists studying oil exploration data noticed a huge circular underground structure. Later research using seismic imaging, gravity mapping, and rock samples confirmed it was the scar left by the asteroid impact. Today... The Chicxulub Crater remains buried beneath the surface, preserving the evidence of one of the most important events in Earth's history. Without that impact...
