Atatürk, by contrast, was a realist who criticized Enver's impulsive decisions and opposed dragging the empire into unwinnable foreign wars. The War of Independence: While Atatürk successfully led the Turkish National Movement in Anatolia to build a modern, independent republic, Enver went into exile and pursued radical pan-Turkic adventures in Central Asia, where he died fighting the Red Army in 1922.
