@annefrankhouse: From Dam Square to Westermarkt, 53 bronze tiles tell the stories of people who helped shape LGBTQIA+ history. Together, they form the Walk of Pride Amsterdam, a unique monument in the heart of the city. The walk leads to the Homomonument: the first monument in the world dedicated to remembering people who were persecuted because of their sexual orientation. The monument consists of three pink granite triangles represent the past, present and future. The past triangle points towards the Anne Frank House and carries the words “Naar vriendschap zulk een mateloos verlangen” (“For friendship such an excessive longing”), a line from a poem by Jacob Israël de Haan about love that could only be expressed as friendship. The present triangle reaches towards the National Monument on Dam Square, connecting queer history with the memory of all the Dutch victims of World War II and other armed conflicts. The future triangle points towards the former COC action centre in the Rozenstraat and serves as a platform: a place to stand up for rights, but also to celebrate the many identities that make our community strong. Unveiled on 5 September 1987, the Homomonument remains a living symbol of remembrance, resistance and pride, used during Amsterdam Pride, commemorations and moments of protest. A monument of the past, a statement in the present, and a promise for the future.
