She was commissioned in 1940 and was regarded as one of the most powerful battleships in Europe during the early years of World War II. Her most important mission was Operation Rheinübung in 1941, during which she was sent to disrupt British supply lines in the Atlantic Ocean. During the operation, Bismarck engaged British warships and famously sank the battlecruiser HMS Hood (51) in a matter of minutes, an event that shocked the Royal Navy. In response, Britain launched a massive pursuit to destroy Bismarck. She was eventually struck by a torpedo dropped by aircraft from the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal (91), which disabled her rudder and left her unable to steer.
