This isn’t necessarily writing related, but I play DnD and this is one of the things I find most challenging about role playing. It’s so satisfying when my character gets a moment and I get to play out something so far from what I would ever do. I would love to dip my toes into writing, but I’m afraid I don’t have the attention span for it.

I'm not a writer, I'm just the guy logging the incident reports for whatever decision they make. I have a vague idea of where we need to go, but how we get there and in how many pieces is purely up to them 😂

What I would do, what I want my characters to do, and what they actually do — three very different outcomes.

Bro my characters turned a 40 page short story into a book series. I get NO say.

My problem is worrying about the readers. I felt that if we make our characters follow their belief, they won't understand. Like the readers will just get annoyed or dislike the character (call them dumb/reckless). It's prob my worry that the audience won't get my character

Yep. I don’t write characters how I want them to react. I write how I think THEY will react.

Recently ive finally managed to stop trying to control every single thing about my writing. ive just been enjoying it and seeing what happens. before I used to try and force ny characters to fit the story I wanted to tell because I was scared of the unpredictability. now I just write and see what my characters want to do. if my mc suddenly goes a completely different direction I go along for the ride. oftentimes- the chaos that leads to is a lot more interesting than the overdone situation I wanted to force them into.

sometimes my characters speak for themselves and sometimes it's so fucking annoying like wtf girl you were not supposed to say that, but because you did I now have to rewrite the part before

Yes!!! I love this advice. I’ve been reading the book Delve, Pivot, Propel by Steven James and I feel this touches on similar advice… what would your character do, not what would you do or think they should do because you want a plot point to go a certain way.

I've argued with my characters before and no matter what, they weren't doing what I wanted them to do. Now I just let them take their own path.

This is a very small, virtually inconsequential example of this, but my main character has nicknames for every single significant person he interacts with. He even calls the main antagonist by a nickname at least once a conversation. I was introducing a romantic interest to the story, and I found out that he doesn’t call her by a nickname at all. Not even just an initial. He only ever uses her full first name. It was frustrating for a minute until I realized that the lack of a nickname for her may characterize their relationship more than any nickname he could have given her. Character autonomy is such a weird thing, but it definitely keeps the story interesting!

After listening to the book Gone With the Wind I’ve realized people don’t let their main characters do bad things and be shitty people in general. I feel like if Scarlet was written today her character would not fly at all but she feels a lot more realistic and impactful than most characters I have seen

Ive had my most recent character change so drastically that ive had to change the plot a bit. I love just letting my character write for themselves, letting the character flow through me

It’s a weird thing to realize. I had a scene set up in my head and I was writing the initial outcome there was this… actual literal voice in my head that said “I would react this way” and it was my character. Only time it’s happened so far though (haven’t written in a while)

Every time I’m entertaining a new scene or piece of plot development, I hyper-focus on if it feels inevitable. And I’ve run into the issue of, wow, you are not likable right now. Readers are going to hate you, but I always stop myself from changing it because, based on their crafted backstory and the hidden reason why they’re making these decisions, the unlikable aspects are inevitable and therefore unavoidable. As a character based writer, I love exploring morally grey choices, and so I have to constantly check myself with this.

This is how I write. When I did collaborative writing it was hard to write with someone people in my group because they had an outcome they wanted and would force us toward and I like to be more “this is what we’re planning but let’s see what the characters actually do when confronted with the situation realtime.” I couldn’t force them to do anything. It took all the joy out of it. Writing was discovering what was going to happen moment to moment through the lens of their experiences, values, etc. just like in the real world. I don’t feel like I have a specific story to tell at the moment so haven’t been writing, but you popping up on my algorithm makes me wonder if that will change soon. I don’t really get writing content ☺️
