It’s so strange to grieve someone you’ve never known. Even though I never met Glen Hansard, I carry so many memories that somehow belong to him. I remember hesitantly pulling Once off the Blockbuster shelf because we didn’t recognize any of the actors. We had been in the mood for something a little more action-packed that night, but we took a chance, and it completely blew us away. Not long after, we rented it again to show my parents, and they were just as moved. I remember listening to the Once soundtrack on repeat during a road trip to Hocking Hills, Ohio, with my wife. That drive felt like it brought us closer, as if our relationship had a little growth spurt while we bonded over that album. Years later, my wife choreographed the most beautiful lyrical dance to the song “Leave.” It brought tears to my eyes every single time I watched her student perform it. It seemed like everyone who watched it was transformed somehow, because there was something so honest and beautiful about it. It’s funny how someone can become part of the soundtrack of your life without ever knowing your name. Rest in peace, Glen. Thank you for leaving behind something so beautifully human.

I saw him with Pearl Jam a couple decades ago. I liked him so much I would always see him when he came to Chicago. I saw the swell season play Chicago theater a couple years ago. Glen was so talented and seemed like one of the best people we got. He will be missed in my household.
