Lewis Adam’s was the founder of Tuskegee University. Booker T Washington was not the founder, but he the was the first principal of Tuskegee University. As a student who attends Tuskegee University, this “dress code” has BEEN a policy to prepare the students for professional settings, and we DO adhere to it. Many HBCU’s have a dress code for this specific reason. Please stop speaking on the university if you dont know the facts.

Me calling my HBCU to send a cease and desist, because why are yall defending bonnets in professional settings? We can get sharp for the club but not school ???

As a proud Tuskegee alumna, I have to respectfully disagree with a few points. First, historical accuracy matters. Booker T. Washington was the first principal and first president of Tuskegee, but the school itself was created by an act of the Alabama Legislature in 1881. While he is widely recognized as the driving force behind building Tuskegee into a world-renowned institution, saying he was simply the "founder" overlooks the broader history of the institution. Second, reducing Booker T. Washington's philosophy to "assimilation" is an oversimplification. His emphasis was on education, discipline, economic independence, self-reliance, and excellence. Whether you agree with every aspect of his philosophy or not, his life's work centered on empowering Black Americans to build institutions, businesses, and communities—not simply conforming to someone else's standards. Historians have long debated his approach, especially in comparison with W.E.B. Du Bois, but calling it mere assimilation ignores that complexity. As someone who attended Tuskegee, I can also say that appearance and professionalism have always been part of the culture. We understood there was a time and place for everything. Dressing appropriately wasn't about trying to be anyone other than ourselves—it was about respecting the institution, preparing for professional environments, and representing the legacy of those who came before us. People can disagree with the current policy, but let's at least ground the conversation in accurate history and the values that have long been associated with Tuskegee.#TU4LIFE❤️💛❤️💛❤️🙄

Every school has a dress code policy when it pertains to instruction, student organizations, and walking around campus at certain times. Yall have to stop. You don’t show up to an interview with pjs, bonnets, hats, and flip flops.

I agree we do get treated the same, however Tuskegee is a STEM school, most, if not all, majors at tuskegee lead to professions where we need to dress professionally as a JOB REQIURMENT. Y’all took one rule the university established and now trying to discredit all the work and good that this university has done. It’s truly disgusting.

They never question the dress code at the club, or the office, but when an HBCU wants you to look like you care, they complain

The ban should make sense because those are items you do not wear outside of the comforts of your home. Like what are you saying? 😒😡

this is so annoying. i never learned anything like this about him just that he was a civil rights activist. i guess they said "he's basically on our side" so they didnt paint him as bad as Rosa Parks and others. side note: your hair is beautiful

I almost stopped listening when she pronounced the name of my school wrong. It's a simplistic view of Booker T. He did a great many things under the table for black folks. But, yes he was a bot conservative in his thoughts.

Yep, most of the HBCU rules come from the legacy of Booker T Washington’s policing of black folk.

This is such a simplistic, sad understanding of who Booker Washington was.

Bababackpack :
Respectability politics is forcing Black people to erase themselves to satisfy somebody else’s idea of worth. Tuskegee teaching students when and where different presentation is appropriate is not necessarily erasure. The standard should not tell students they are unworthy. It should give them the range to enter any room, understand the moment, and still remain themselves.
