MYTH: Vendors charge more just because it’s a wedding. I've seen this one floating around a lot, and I get it: weddings are expensive. But here’s the truth: most professional vendors aren’t arbitrarily increasing their prices just because you said the word “wedding.”
⠀
Weddings come with a level of pressure, complexity, and personalization that other events simply don’t. As a photographer, I’m not just showing up and snapping photos for a few hours. I’m:
• Building a custom timeline
• Spending hours of admin time coordinating with other vendors
• Supplying backup gear just in case, a styling kit, emergency supplies, and enough equipment to cover everything from tight and dark spaces to wide open natural light shots
• Shooting for 8+ hours straight, sometimes in high heat
• Editing hundreds of images with careful attention to detail (object removal, skin smoothing, hair touch ups, etc) This is additional work that I simply don’t have to do for other events and portrait photography sessions. And while I absolutely love doing it, it takes a lot of time and preparation, so I charge a rate that reflects that for me.
⠀
Every vendor you hire, from your florist to your planner to your DJ, is doing extra work behind the scenes to ensure your once-in-a-lifetime day runs smoothly. I fully believe that there are wedding vendors for every budget. You may have to compromise on quality, experience, customization, or other factors to find one, but they do exist. If you receive a quote back from a vendor that is out of your budget, that may not be the vendor for you and that’s okay! But pro-tip: if you really want to work with a vendor, let them know your budget and ask if they could build a custom package with less coverage or a smaller service to accommodate. They may or may not be able to do so, but it never hurts to ask and you may be pleasantly surprised. At the end of the day, you’re not just paying for a product or a service. You’re paying for the ability to handle anything that might come up on your wedding day.
⠀
So no, it’s not about a “wedding tax.” It’s about the value, time, and emotional labor that goes into one of the most important days of your life. 💍✨
