Four years after No Way Home, an isolated Peter Parker is living in a Queens apartment under an alias, fighting crime 24/7 as Spider-Man while watching MJ move on with her new boyfriend; this severe emotional stress triggers an unstable spider-DNA mutation that gives him organic web-shooters and terrifying bursts of uncontrollable rage. While consulting Bruce Banner for a cure, Peter collides with Frank Castle (The Punisher) while investigating a mysterious entity jump-possessing criminals—and eventually the Hulk—to attack Damage Control (DODC) facilities. The entity is revealed to be Jean Grey, a young mutant whose powers detonated out of grief after DODC illegally experimented on her and killed her sister. Instead of fighting her, Peter enters Jean's mind and connects with her using his own painful memories of losing Aunt May, convincing her to stop her rampage; however, Frank Castle fires a long-range sniper shot to eliminate Jean, forcing Spider-Man to jump into the crosshairs and take a bullet point-blank to the chest. As Peter bleeds out, Jean uses telekinesis to hold his blood vessels shut until Frank carries his limp body into an emergency room, saving his life. Once Peter recovers, he realizes isolating himself was destroying his humanity, leading him to a local café to re-introduce himself to Ned—and when they instinctively perform their secret high school handshake, the muscle memory instantly breaks Doctor Strange's spell, flooding Ned's memories of Peter right back.
