When I was a production builder, I told all my buyers that if they call me with a complaint, they must start the call with something positive. I didn’t care what it was, as long as it was positive. If they didn’t, I told them I would hang up on them. After about two hang ups, they got with the program and most of them actually appreciated it.

Some days I think everyone in construction should have studied psychology before they learned how to run equipment or read blueprints. The hardest part of this business isn’t excavation, framing, or concrete—it’s communication, expectations, emotions, and personalities. Every job is a lesson in human behavior. You’re managing clients, employees, subcontractors, inspectors, suppliers, and neighbors. Everyone sees the same situation differently, and if you don’t understand what’s really being said—or what’s not being said—you’ll struggle. The job is predictable. People aren’t.
