As a free spirit raised in this exact way, I felt this in the pit of my stomach. Every action I take feels like I’m risking my life. I still do things I wanna do because I rebelled but that feeling of endless anxiety is exhausting. Great video!

They introduce doubt and then you doubt yourself. My parents did this and continue to do this to me at 37 years old. I’m in therapy right now specifically for this issue of doubting myself as a direct result of this.

I think my parents would catastrophize not because they wanted to fuck me over but because they wanted to use me to regulate their emotions. They are not emotionally intelligent enough to be purposely sinister, I think they're anxious people that at best let their anxiousness overflow on to me and at worst aim to control me as a way to regulate themselves. They believe in their fears more than in my (and ultimately their own) ability to deal with difficult situations.

I understand this perspective! There’s also parents I do think unintentionally instill fear, anxiety, and self-doubt because that’s all they know. When they have a child that goes against the grain, it seems unsafe and unfamiliar to their norm.

It’s not even that they said “no” to things, it’s that they always communicated this type of doubt or “that’s silly” attitude to things. Like sometimes they’d literally laugh at me. I never felt like the things I wanted were important or worth pursuing because I was too young or not experienced/smart enough. I never even want to tell them the things I’m doing before I do them anymore because I feel like they’re going to laugh
