I highly recommend you read the book “all about love” by bell hooks it helps you to understand the difference between cathexis and love that most parents are raised to believe that cathexis is love and what their confusing is that caring for a child is not immediately an expression of love investing in another human being is not immediately an expression of love that abuse and neglect and love cannot coexist. And that doesn’t mean your parent was a horrible person that just means that they were raised to confuse cathexis with love.
