his handling of Athena especially upset me. the scene where shes forced to her knees and beheaded in particular. I understand it was meant to be symbolic of their connection being severed, but youre telling me, ATHENA, goddess of wisdom AND WARFARE, is screaming, crying, staring at Odysseus as two mortal men shove her to thr ground and cut off her head? I think NOT.

directors who can't create stories with women are bad directors. if you're incapable of relating to and writing interesting stories with half the population, you are not talented.

"how can a 3 hr movie cover all of the lores 😫" A 2 HR AND 22 ISH MINUTES TIKTOK MUSICAL DID If he's so damn focused on the "cinematic" aspect, it means nothing even if it's cinematic if it can't show a story.

At what point does “inability” to write women just become refusal? Do we think he’s ever actually trying to write fleshed-out female characters and failing, or is it more likely that he just doesn’t care to even attempt.

Penelope's tests and cunning against the suitors were also to show WHY Odysseus fought so hard to get home. Why when givin the option of the love of goddesses, he chose to risk his life to get home. Penelope is his match. They were soulmates with the minds to fight the world to be with eachother. That is such an empowering kind of love that's lost when you take away who Penelope is.

Nolan straight up can’t write women and it’s disappointing

inability to write women is being generous tbh, this might be his most egregious one

i hated that penelopes unraveling of the shroud was revealed by antinous's discovery as oppose to simply showing penelopes scheming to the audience. It strips away her own intelligence and tranfers it onto a slimy man

It’s funny because by trying to insert these modern themes and sensibilities into the work, Nolan ironically removes the nuance and agency from one of the few empowered female characters

His version of the Odyssey is basically an American military film. Odysseus' epithet is clever and wily, he's not just a soldier coming home with guilt.

No. I hated Nolan’s Penelope because she wasn’t the equal to Odysseus’s wit. She was just a weepy wife that wanted her husband. The challenge feels more like a “fuck it. Do this I guess” than a legitimate test of wit and skill.

I was sad they took out the marriage bed test. That’s my favorite part of the story.

So you’re telling me Nolan watered down Penelope into a grieving woman waiting for her husbands return…. How incredibly regressive and ignorant

The whole point of Odysseus and Penelope’s relationship is it is one built off genuine love and Penelope is as cunning as Odysseus which is one thing that makes them work so well

she's literally a Spartan. And I feel like they didn't even give Anne Hathaway a chance to show that side of her

I think this is the worst of Nolan’s writing of women. It was such a disservice to Penelope and Athena and Anne Hathaway and Zendaya.

I agree, while watching I kept on repeating to myself, “this isn’t my Penelope, my Circe, my Athena” bc they weren’t. The characters are so bland and lacking of their wits and traits that make them so interesting

me when christopher nolan writes penelope as a grieving wife instead of a clever woman tricking pretty much everyone she interacts with to keep her home safe
