@reasonandreligion: I understand that this video may produce more questions than answers. It was a 9 minute video that I broke down to under 3 minutes. I will answer questions as they come. Milem’s definition also considers that the “existence of God” needs to be handled with much more nuanced due to pantheistic concepts or Bishop’s concept of God as love… I highly recommend reading the paper #philosophy #atheism
what do you think of the whole christianity vs islam debate? I've been seeing so much content of christians (particularly american/european ones) constantly trying to "disprove" islam, and using atheism as a sort of buffer to do it. then most muslim creators are always trying to explain why their analysis of the religion is false, just to get the same 3 phrases thrown again. everyone's just stuck in a cycle.

I don't really understand why sociology is even being talked about when it comes to the definition of atheism. I understand wanting to bring that into the discussion but if we give the same word too many definitions doesn't it seem to add needless ambiguity to that word and water down the usefulness of it? I can see the usefulness of roping sociology into the conversation but wouldn't it hold the integrity of the word atheism in tact if you coined a different word to address those characteristics?

When theists say God, what do you say ? What is your grounding?

In a previous video you disagreed with the New Atheists definition of atheism, but what’s the practical difference between that and Milem’s? They both in practice seem like the same thing.

atheism illogical :
Many modern philosophical and logical-language practices are bassackwards. Dawkins gave us the concept of the meme as a unit of cultural transmission and argued that god-belief is likely a byproduct of otherwise-useful cognitive tendencies. What I am adding — my own synthesis, not his — is that this byproduct may have evolved into something that functions as a genuine meme-organism: a self-replicating pattern that gives life to The God Delusion itself. Not only are theists infected with a species, but atheists carry one too.
Language is a shared system of labels for things — but only after the thing has been established by ontology. First we see what P is. Then we name it. Full stop.
So: God(s) exist?
1.
Yes.
2.
No.
3.
I don't know.
4.
Might, maybe — but I don't yet have enough knowledge of what biblical-style gods actually are to see whether they exist, nor enough evidence to say with certainty that a philosophical spaghetti-monster sky-god construct with all the omni-properties exists.
I am not claiming to have settled this. I am only saying that not-yet-demonstrated is not the same as false — like telling a person a thousand years ago that electricity exists, even though I cannot zap them with it, force them under lightning, or rub a balloon on their head right now.
(Disclaimer: I am not trying to articulate all scientific or philosophical groundings for this comment in this comment.)
