@plantedinthegarden: Squash vine borer. One of the most destructive pests for squash, zucchini, and pumpkins. Here's how to identify and deal with them at every stage. The adult looks like a wasp but it's actually a moth. Orange and black body, clear wings. They fly during the day and lay tiny reddish-brown eggs at the base of stems. Check your stems regularly. If you spot eggs, press tape over them and peel off. Simple and effective. Once the larvae hatch, they bore into the stem and feed from the inside. Signs include wilting leaves and sawdust-like frass near the affected stem. If you catch it early, you can carefully slice the stem, remove the larvae, and save the plant. For vines growing on the ground, bury the healthy part of the stem so it can root again. For vertical growing like ours, we tape the wound to help it heal. Prevention is key. Check often, remove eggs early, and act fast if you see damage. Read our book "The Compact Garden" which covers pests, soil, and growing food in small space. This is what I would’ve done. I will catch all of the bugs, all the larva and feed them into my chickens, extra protein, snack.
