Growing up the son of a Yorkshire coal miner, he went on to translate the contours of pebbles, bones, and weathered driftwood into massive, organic forms. Whether capturing the quiet resilience of Londoners sheltering from WWII air raids or scattering his sculptures across open fields, his work has always been about connection between art, the human experience and the natural world. True to his belief that art should belong to everyone, he declined a knighthood in 1951.
