Here’s the trimming of a leather hard, stoneware vase, thrown with stepper top section that’s really defined and made sharper during this process. My pots are generally thrown to a relatively ‘finished’ state, the angles are already pronounced, rims smooth, yet sometimes I find it easier to complete certain features at the leather hard stage. Take the step for instance, when throwing it, if I wanted to get it perfectly right, I’d have to spend time pushing back and forth with a kidney to create a step with no burrs of clay on its sharpest point, it takes time. Instead, for features like this, I tend to throw them ‘rough’ (relatively), very quickly, and then spend time cleaning it up and thinning it out once the vessel is leather hard. I feel as if I can be more precise during the trimming step, and truth be told, whilst I like throwing, I much prefer turning, so I favour doing much of my finishing work at the leather hard stage. The step itself creates a ledge my glazes will be able to both break over and pool on and I need to begin introducing the subtle decorative feature into many more of my pots. #vase #handmade #ceramics #wheelthrownpottery #qualitycontrol #clay
