you're falling for japanese propaganda 😭. like yes, the story showcases the worst part of Mizu Shobai. the mangaka literally went and interviewed, discussed, and asked hundreds of women in that life to talk about their experiences. everything show is brutal and painful but it does not glorify them. it does not shy away from them. it is literally to call it out. the japanese people who try to "cancel it" do so literally because they want to hide this part of japanese society. the sexism, the exploitation, the ableism that gets so bad that women end up there as a last resort. the people opposing it literally say "if you show it to the mainstream public it will harm the image foreigners have of japan". making a petition for it is literally falling for japanese whitewashing propaganda. yes, a lot of women in kabukicho, or in akiba, or other Mizu shobai places tend to have mental illnesses, and get ostracised by society until this is, tragically, the only place they can survive. the fact that you mention that but still think that this should be hidden and not mentioned to "not influence the public"?? yeah, maybe people deserve to see the many ways japan is decades behind on many societal issues. you can do better instead of being a Sanae shill, wittingly or not.

The sheer naïveté of your take would be funny if it weren't so embarrassing. You’re swallowing sanitized, surface-level rhetoric hook, line, and sinker, completely oblivious to why narratives like Michan to Yamada actually provoke friction. Many Japanese people dislike works like this precisely because they pull back the curtain on the darker, morally grey underbelly of Japan. Fiction isn't a moral purity test, and demanding that stories conform to your preferred worldview isn't "criticism", it’s intellectual laziness. Banning or dismissing complex, fucked-up stories just because they make you uncomfortable only proves you lack the maturity to engage with heavy themes in the first place.

lowkey the second you said “if Japan doesn’t want it, then you know is bad” made me laugh because what exactly is meant to make me trust that judgement??

Why should something be banned just because the subject matter is upsetting? I also HIGHLY doubt there are a large amount of Japanese people against this anime. Japan pumps out soooooo much worse

Crunchyroll has had MA-rated anime’s on its platform almost from its very beginning and having a ‘omg but what about the children?!’ Take is a very evangelical Christian mom-esque take in regards to judging a piece of media. I haven’t read the manga, I have no stake in this. I’m just really bored of people policing media just because it makes them uncomfortable. Go watch something else, no one is forcing you. And if the children watch it, I’m sure they’ll be fine. We’ve all watched things we weren’t supposed to at ages we weren’t supposed to.

as a former SWer who is AuDHD it's important for these stories to be told. disability, SW, and exploitation from men is a big intersection and nobody seems to be willing to talk about it in a way that doesn't just gloss over things or glamorize it from what I've seen.

But depiction doesn't automatically equal endorsement so I'm confused nothing u said in this video even implies glamorization?? So why shouldn't it exist if it's based on the authors own experiences?

As a woman who has experienced sexual abuse/violence , I want to see more stories that include stuff like this so more women like us can have it normalized to the point where they’re able to come out and talk about the things that have happened. Also, from my understanding they’re not sexualizing the stuff that’s happening and a lot of it comes from the stories of real women. I’ve only recently learned about this manga and now anime, so I’ll have to do a little bit more research but with the things that I have heard and seen I don’t see a problem.

Is it glorifying and fetishizing these things or is it framing all of this as a tragic nuanced problem that effects the characters? Is it trying to tell us about the lives of people like this? If that’s the case, it’s okay not to like it and avoid watching it, but I think it’s messed up to say that things like it should not exist. I think anime like this can be good to educate people and help us empathize with others and spread awareness

as fucked up as it is, these topics happen to people in real life all the time. i think it's a good way to talk about the mistreatment of disabled people and how even people close to them might even feel to embarrassed to step in. this is a very large problem in alot of east Asian countries where disabled people were not viewed as human which made alot of them act out or cause alot of them to get into sex work. it's not insane or groundbreaking that they're trying to squash something that actively points out alot of flaws in their society.

is it sexualized and weird endorsement or is it just a depiction of a tragic reality? is Japan trying to cancel it because they suddenly care about sexualizing children or is there a different reason. I'm genuinely asking because you're saying one thing and the comments say another

i’m really grateful anime is one of the few mediums that’s still willing to dive into uncomfortable, morally messy stories without feeling the need to sanitize everything. if something isn’t for you, you can always just not watch it. i don’t think censoring fiction actually addresses the real issues people are worried about .. those problems exist outside of media too. engaging with difficult stories isn’t the same as endorsing them.

you've misunderstood the situation. the issue is not innately rooted in the mature topics/promotion of these ideas, but how it may reflect harsh and ugly truths about japanese society/culture
