I once had a cat. He lived a happy life, he was loved and well-fed, generally healthy, but he suddenly, one day to the next, stopped eating, and just lay there, doing nothing, and his breath smelled horrible. I took him to the vet. They told me he had a rapid acute case of something, I forgot the name, but it basically made his urine crystallize inside his bladder. They told me that without surgery, he would die within a day or two in agonizing pain. And they could perform it. But it would cost a small fortune, plus extra, because it was a Sunday. I didn't have savings, at least not that much. I was starting to consider if I could get a loan somewhere, thinking options and possibilities, and then the nurse hit me with "well, the odds of him surviving the surgery is around 10% at this point". I opted to have him euthanized. I was devastated. I didn't want to let him go, but I was not ready to go into debt, especially not since the odds were so diminutive. I sat with him, petting him and giving him little treats, during the injection and until well past his final breath.
I did not go to get a tattoo in his memory. I've recently considered it, now that my financial situation has become more stable, and have one for each of the three cats I've ever had.
