@nyahsky Since you seem to understand Tyla’s situation, maybe you can now imagine how many Coloured people feel attacked just for existing as themselves. It’s like telling Afro-Caribbean people, Black Latinos, Colombians, Puerto Ricans, etc. to stop using those names because they don’t “fit” into your narrow definition of what Blackness should look like. We’ve seen this before. Remember Cardi catching strays for “not being Black American enough,” and then also being told she wasn’t “Afro-Caribbean enough” to say the N-word? That’s what this is. It’s stripping people of their identity. It’s colonization all over again — except this time it’s coming from people who literally look like you. If you take time to read the comments, maybe 90% of them are from Coloured people. And look how diverse we are. Some look African-American, some Indian, some Puerto Rican, some Latino, some Mexican, some South African. That’s the point. “Coloured” isn’t just a race box to tick. It’s a community but just like Afro-Caribbean, Black Latino, Colombian, Puerto Rican identities it comes with its own culture, traditions, language, food, and history too. We’re not just a mix on paper. We’re people with our own way of speaking, our own music, our own identity. So telling them not to use “Coloured” is like telling those communities to stop claiming their names because they don’t fit one definition. I don’t know if I’m explaining it well, We’ve always been a community. And in this community, no one is better than the other.
