Tooooo be fair, in this case, you maybe should at least skim the introduction because much of that is explanation of why Emily Wilson chose to translate certain things

Right lol I purposely skip all the introductions until I read the work by itself so I’m not influenced or “spoiled” if you can be with classics lol 🖤 I read all the opinions after experiencing the work

The great courses streaming has a 12 part lecture by proffessor Elizabeth vandiver of Whitman college who goes over the Iliad and odyssey and does a fantastic job teaching the history and nuance of Homer and the age of antiquity. If anyone enjoys lectures as apposed to reading :)

I’m also reading this and 100%-You should read the notes-the author not only gives significant and important historical context, but she explains why it’s translated the way that it translate… I can assure you once you start reading it will make so much more sense having read the notes
