2077 was based largely on Syndicate 2012. That's why it has quickhacks for targets to off themselves or go cyberpsycho on other enemies or have weapons blow up. those were all hacks from syndicate 2012. And also the weapons combat is very similar

The issue with your argument is that netrunning is really three systems in Cyberpunk 2077: quickhacks, the things you do at terminals (I forget the term), and the true deep dive netrunning with the chairs and the baths. Oh and kinda sorta braindances but not really. The true old school hacking still exists but it's reserved for the npcs around you because there's not really a good way to play that type of hacking with the game they made, just like the tabletop games have turned hacking into a separate game at the table. Quickhacks are just a game mechanic that gives you another way to fight that isn't guns, swords, and fists. Yes, it does make you a "wizard". And yes, quickhacks are integrated into the lore so the game makes sense. But the real netrunning still exists and is a major story and lore thing, it's just not V-compatible. The crew from Edgerunners has two netrunners and their job is real netrunning, not quickhacking. They just might rely on quickhacks for combat.

I don’t know how they would implement it the way that they should, but I definitely agree with you that it could’ve been way more interesting

I didn't think we were actually netrunning in the game, just hacking. Actual netrunners are the people strapped into those chairs.

I agree that it would be cool to do actual netrunning in the game, but I cant get behind the idea that being a sci-fi wizard is somehow NOT the coolest thing in the world

I get that it’s be hard to translate the TTRPG style to a FPS but they essentially turned netrunners into spellcasters. Would’ve preferred if they took the watch dogs route and made it mostly utility with only some direct damage.

I totally see the logic in this argument, but I also can’t imagine how they’d be able to keep things closer to the TTRPGs while being the kind of action game it is. Maybe something closer to NieR Automata hacking? Though that doesn’t feel quite right either.

i feel like 2077 had to add quick hacks otherwise it would just break the gameplay loop. while yes you can jack in and hack a buildings network but they also needed a way to have it so that netrunner builds can still use their kit in physical combat. and it also has an actual in lore explanation

quick hacks in Cyberpunk 2077 are fucking dope. hacking an enemy to just straight up blow their own brains out in the middle of their gang members is still one of the coolest things I've ever done in a game

The netrunning mechanics in Cyberpunk: Red are the single best rules for hacking I’ve seen in any cyberpunk TTRPG. And I’ve played a lot of them.

i dont mind the new net running in 2077 because in 2020 the netrunner rules are 1/3 of the rulebook and i just wanted to play a quick oneshot. Its pretty f. cool that there is a 2nd layer of gameplay, but it kinda sucks that one kind of player can do it. I but after playing system shock remake, i really hope they do something with the net for real in orion

The game mainly focuses around V who is not a real netrunner. They had dove into the black wall and done some quick hacks but that is mostly it. Netrunners have more potential than 2077 shows and that I believe is what edgerunners is trying to improve upon.

I don’t hate quick hacks for a video game, but it’s a real shame we didn’t get proper net running. I want to be able to do VR combat with dwellers. We see other people do it, but is not being able to feels like content dropped to hit a deadline.

I get what you're saying but your reaction seems over blown. the video game had to work like a video game, just like how Larian studios couldn't get DnD perfectly into a video game format some things have to be altered. and also your really down playing what a wizard does. altering reality isn't just clicking a button.

I'm really hoping the next game they do reverts netrunning back and makes it more of it's own system in the video game instead of just being as bland as it is in 2077. Even in the ttrpg, I usually don't want to engage in quickhacks brought by CEMK just because it makes for a less interesting fight for the players. Instead of using the environment in wild ways they just try to fry the enemy directly. No fun in that.

I think they had a more advanced version of Netrunning in the works, but due to trying to get it out the door at the 11th hour, they dumbed it down. Anyone remember the 2018 demo where they had the fem V jack into a Maelstromer and suddenly you enter a type of matrix where you're moving digital cubes around?

I think it works perfectly fine as a video game as long as it doesn't overtake the previous version in the tabletop. I think both can coexist

the E3 gameplay reveal and 1.0 had some ideas about netrunning. it involved breaching the local net architecture before you could upload your quickhacks, the downside tho is that it forced netrunner builds to be stealth builds as well. perhaps im the future CDPR will lean more heavily on the separation between street netrunners and deep dive net runners and setting up separate skills and abilities to differentiate the two.

honestly I wish that there was a full fledged netrunning missions, if 2077 wasn't so focused on V being a solo I would've enjoyed the game way more

the way cyberpunk genre portrays net running was never really a viable mechanic. it was made as it is to make it more spell castery

Gonna be that annoying fallout nerd for a second but that example there is a little weird when you remember that it’s explicitly stated that that chapter of the brotherhood broke off for a while and has a culture of recruiting wastlanders the very thing the new Vegas chapter was refusing to do and why they were dying. It’s not that weird that after they solved the mutant threat in dc and went back to their original mission that they’d be the the most well off version

I heavily agree. I love playing a net runner in 2077 but the idea that a net runner can wifi turn you knock you out or worse breaks the idea that everyone would be so willing to chrome up. I should have to atleast find the access point to the local net the enemies are connected too or if someone has no arm implants then suicide shouldn't work on them.

I'm only familiar with 2020 and 2077, and the party is did play with for the 2020 game no one played a netrunner, but when I read the rules for netrunning in 2020 it felt really awkward and disconnected, like the netrunner player was just playing an entirely different game and when you make a session as a DM you essentially have to make 2 version of every encounter and make sure both are tuned correctly and can end at roughly the same time so half the table isn't just sitting there waiting for the netrunner to finish. the 2077 way just feels so much more cohesive for a party.

Does the net in 2077 actually extend between cities? I got the impression from the game that each city had its own isolated net. With only very limited connectivity between cities

So genuine question. What would you have them do, without adding a bunch of stuff? 2077 at its core is a FPS game. What your describing doesn’t sound like it functions in a setting where you’re the only person. Without adding a bunch of entirely separate enemies/missions/paths for everything in the game, what would a full spec net runner look like to you in 2077?
