@the.amargi: In July 1983, Saddam Hussein’s regime separated around 8,000 Barzani Kurdish men and boys from their families. Most never returned. After 2003, mass graves in southern Iraq confirmed what their families had feared for two decades. But the genocide did not end with the executions. It continued in the lives of the women left behind. Overnight, they became heads of households, workers, caregivers and guardians of memory. They raised children, protected education, survived poverty and carried a community the regime had tried to destroy. Their testimonies show that genocide is not only measured by the dead, but also by the lives forced to continue in its aftermath.
