I'd like to mention , yes our bathrooms are free, but it is part of our culture to purchase something in the business you used the potty at. If I run into Michael's or a gas station, I'll buy a candy bar or a water on the way out, its polite. .

It is stressful to find a bathroom in many places in Europe however, even though you have to pay, it’s much nicer to be able to go into a clean bathroom. Whereas in the US, many of our public bathrooms are not very clean. Additionally, I much prefer your stall walls two hours. At least you’re public bathrooms offer privacy.

Every public bathroom I went to in Russia, there was an elderly babushka at the entrance, taking a ruble for the privilege to use their nightmare toilets

I’m an American who has traveled to Europe over 15 times. The bathrooms are absolutely disgusting, they’re all different ways to flush the toilet, you have to pay for bathrooms, and they’re always such a far trek from where you were originally.

There was a large push to ban paid toliets in the 70s. The Committee to end pay toliets, a lesser known civil rights movement 😂

In restaurants, bars etc having a bathroom is the law, but generally reserved for customers. Availability of toilets not connected to a business is pretty bad. In NYC we were constantly told how much better the public bathroom situation was in Europe because people like cab drivers have a hard time. Roughly 60 years ago it became illegal to charge for toilets in NYC and most of them in NY closed after that because the 10 cents it used to cost, paid for cleaning.

The funny thing is, they didn’t used to be. We have free public restrooms because of a group called The Committee to End Pay Toilets in America in the 70’s. Apparently membership cost 25 cents. Yall can do it!

Granted I’m currently bedridden. But with someone with lifelong bladder issues this has always stressed me out. I am allowed to use staff toilets etc (I have a special card & key) but I have to thoroughly research where toilets are before leaving anywhere 😭

When I visited Europe in the 80s, I was shocked that there was no public bathrooms. I was also mortified that many of the bathrooms were for both sexes and not just for women or men.
