@doseofjit: One of the most common things I counsel patients on is that nitrofurantoin can turn your urine dark yellow or brown. Why does this happen? Nitrofurantoin is filtered by the kidneys and excreted into the urine, where it works to treat the urinary tract infection. The medicine has a naturally yellow-brown colour, so as it’s passed into the urine, it can change the urine’s appearance. This is completely expected and is usually harmless. If patients aren’t warned beforehand, it’s easy to mistake this colour change for something more serious, which can understandably cause unnecessary worry or even lead people to stop taking their antibiotic early. Nitrofurantoin is also one of the antibiotics commonly supplied through Pharmacy First in England for eligible women with uncomplicated urinary tract infections, making this a counselling point pharmacists discuss regularly. ⚠️ If you notice bright red urine, blood in the urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe pain, or feel generally very unwell, don’t assume it’s just the medicine—seek medical advice promptly. 🎥 This video is for education and entertainment only and is not personal medical advice.
