I do agree that was very inappropriate to wear to receive a SCHOLARSHIP....but if I wanna go to class that I pay for dressed however I don't see that issue? That's what the extra curricular events are for, to learn.

Late 90s XU grad here. We had a dress code when I was there and if you looked like a clown, you stood out. A prof, nun or even the president would pull a student aside if you were not representing XU well. We were expected to present well and we wanted to present well. I’m not sure how the standards slipped but happy to see XU and other HBCUs establish, resume, revive, or revise, etc., it’s dress code.

Im a double graduate of two elite PWI universities (AB and professional degree) and let me report: those white students wore ANYTHING to class. Sports bras, baseball caps, long shirt with tiny shorts, or short pajama bottoms were the norm. Sometimes athletes didnt even wear shirts, or muscles shirts, barely there. NO ONE CARED 👀

It isn’t wrong. There is a time and place for everything. My mother always told me the moment I set one foot outside of the house I am representing myself at all times and will close doors if I don’t look presentable. Black women don’t have that privilege.

All I can think of when I hear stories like this is the Don Draper quote “That’s what the money is for!”You are being offered a scholarship and are told upfront what you need to do to be able to accept it. Attend a banquet, a little speech, and A DRESS CODE. Either accept the money and conditions, or refuse graciously. That’s it.

People forget that rules exist for a reason. Every culture have what's considered formal and informal clothings. Bonnets, durags, and other clothings that draw unnecessary attention to yourself will always be inappropriate in formal/ professional settings.

This reminds me of the woman that showed up to a job interview in shorts and literally argued that her outfit was appropriate with the interviewer. Messed up a whole bag. I have worked at several tech companies where there isn’t much of a dress code but I’m still showing up appropriately for the interview.

In varsity you can meet a future mentor, employer, high net worth friends, business partners or a spouse. dress as you will with that information.

I worked at a high school where they did "spirit" week. on pajama day, some of these girls would come in lingerie... as teenagers! I would say no one should wear lingerie to be inclusive, but the boys weren't doing this. over the years, the dress code fights became so hard to battle. the butt cheeks out, the tube tops with so much skin. im a fan of fashion expression and even doing so with sexuality. but... time and place! I had a student show me an outfit she was going to wear for an admissions interview. I had her return it and purchase something more professional. she was latina, with a sketchy GPA, but a lot of community service and great college essays.... I was like, you cannot afford to risk this college opportunity. did she get accepted.... yes.
