If we don’t improve how we recognize, treat, and support severe postpartum mental illness, another family could experience an unimaginable tragedy. One of the hardest parts of following this case has been seeing women tear down another woman instead of asking how our healthcare system can do better. That kind of judgment is exactly what keeps so many mothers from speaking honestly about how they’re feeling. As an experienced labor and delivery nurse and a mother who experienced postpartum depression, I know firsthand that postpartum mental illness is not something you can simply “snap out of.” Hormonal changes can be overwhelming, and when those changes are combined with anxiety, depression, or postpartum psychosis, mothers need compassionate, evidence-based care! NOT shamed for things that are out of their control! No single medication is a complete solution. We need ongoing support. We need providers who truly listen, follow up, educate families, and take concerns seriously. We need a healthcare system that treats maternal mental health with the same urgency as physical health.
