Southern leaders thought the war would be over in a couple weeks bc they had dominance in textiles. They literally said “the north will give up immediately, what are they gonna do? Fight naked?” During the war international markets switched to Indian cotton which was cheaper and higher quality. The southern economy never recovered. The legacy of slavery is a bunch of southern states that don’t even generate enough tax revenue to support themselves.

They can’t talk about Jefferson Davis or the actual head figures of the Confederacy because it would give the game away. Alexander Stephens the VP literally states the war is about the “institution of slavery” in the Cornerstone Speech. And somehow Stephens got re-elected back into the House in 1873!! He became governor of Georgia in 1882!

The confederates literally constitutionally protected slavery so no state had the “right” to get rid of slavery in the future if they chose to

Right. Robert E. Lee. Single-handedly lost what was the most important battle in the War, Gettysburg. Don’t take my word for it. Read what both Longstreet and Pickett had to say.

I’m 61 years old and grew up in Texas and heard this all my life, even in public school. They said “it about state rights.” These were lies told to us.

Correct analysis. Let’s take it a step further. What is the real color of the State flags in the South? Plain white.

Thank you. Live in CHS, SC. Local paper leading up to the 150th Anniversary printed actual documents leading up and during the war. Just can’t read the reasons why SC was/ did vote to create its own country and not see slavery directly referred to, or the Corner Stone speech from CSA VO Stevens & not see how Blacks were referred to like something from 1930’s Germany. Go read the actual documents. They are plain.

another one is actually the south was indeed poised to win the war until blk people were brought into the cause which is the singular thing that turned the tide

A lot of people right now don’t want to hear, think, or speak of this nations past. Be it good or bad. They just don’t want to touch it or talk about it. It’s a cultural sea change from when I was younger. We could talk about it. Was it uncomfortable? Yeah a little, but we could talk about it. Everyone seemed to understand that it was difficult but kinda necessary. Now it’s just avoided.
