“I’ve been sick about it all week” tells me one thing only. The company has known they’re letting her go all week, and rather than letting her get started with her job search on Monday morning, they decided to squeeze what they could out of her for a week and ruin her weekend by telling her on a Friday when all she could do is stew about it and maybe update her resume. Rude.

When I was laid off my manager told me I could the camera off if I wanted to. I told her “no, we’re all making eye contact here”. They all knew I was in a fragile state with my mom starting cancer treatment the next day. When 2 days earlier they told me they’ve got my back during this.

I found out I was laid off when I came back from lunch and couldn’t access my email. Went to the team lead and asked what was going on. She looked panicked, picked up the phone to call her boss. Then said to me “you come in 15 minutes late every day so we’re letting you go”. I reminded her that I was a consultant who subbed on their contract and I didn’t have to be onsite at all, as I wasn’t an employee. I think the word I’d use to describe her face would be flabbergasted. Anyway, I said ok, if you don’t want me, fine. But you’re paying me for the next 4 months of my contract. And they did.

I was laid off this way last April. myself, my manager and 4 teammates all got the same invites on the same day. we connected the dots before the first person had their meeting.
