@tilscience: For centuries, period blood was called gross and not worth studying. Turns out it might help some women get pregnant when nothing else could. 12 women with severe intrauterine adhesions, which is scar tissue that wrecks the uterine lining, had all failed multiple rounds of IVF. Researchers isolated stem cells from their own menstrual blood, expanded them in a lab, and transplanted them back. 5 out of 12 became pregnant. That’s a 41.7% increase in pregnancy rate. Of course this is one small study on one specific condition, not a general green light for everyone struggling with fertility. But it’s a sign of how little we’ve actually studied the fluid half the population sheds every month and how much we might have missed that could help millions of people around the world with conditions we’ve been struggling with for decades.
