The New Law, Ruling Date: June 29, 2026: Spain’s Supreme Court ruled that migrants arriving by water must be given formal identification, access to legal counsel, and the right to have an asylum claim heard before they can be removed. They cannot simply be pushed back on the spot. Because of the Supreme Court ruling, everyone who successfully crosses into Spanish territory must now be entered into the legal and bureaucratic processing system, which has completely backlogged local reception and identification centers.
